Taking the Archives into the Future
Written by Joel Cunningham April 10, 2012
The Episcopal Archives is an asset of great value that needs to be enabled to be of even greater value. It provides loving support to parishes, dioceses, lay and clergy leaders, and scholars in drawing insight and vision from the vital documents and records of the Episcopal Church throughout its history. In spite of severe limitations in their current facilities and equipment, the Archives' extraordinary staff helps to lay the groundwork for understanding the Church today and preparing it to move forward wisely and well.
Promoting Scripture, Tradition, and Reason
Written by Alistair So March 15, 2012
We often hear how the Episcopal Church holds a sensible balance of Scripture, Tradition and Reason in our life of faith. The Executive Council Committee on Science, Technology, and Faith exists to provide advice to the church on maintaining that balance. Our specific mandate is to provide education for the Executive Council and The Episcopal Church on issues relating to science and technology as they interact with ethics, theology and the Christian faith.
The Status of Women in the Church and Society
Written by Helen Mbele-Mbong February 13, 2012
As we told our stories, women from other parts of the Communion were amazed to hear of the very real difficulties immigrant women face and their lack of rights, of the extent of violence within the family and the difficulties of finding support and safety, as well as the lack of access to health care in the United States, all the more amazing as to some, at least, the United States was expected to be a place of comfort and freedom. All of us were stunned by the stories of rape and violence in war-torn countries. And through all the stories, it was clear that women and girls everywhere had to struggle to gain access to education, health care, reproductive rights, legal equality, ... What was the church doing about it? In some cases, a lot. In some cases, not nearly enough.
Growing the Financial Assets of the Church
Written by Joel Motley January 15, 2012
The Investment Committee of the Executive Council is responsible for making investment decisions for trust fund assets of the Church as well as for assets of a few dioceses that have chosen to join their funds under the Investment Committee. Assets of over 1,000 trust funds serve as an endowment for many different ministries of the church both in the United States and around the world. Most of the trust funds were given to the church over many years by individuals and families seeking to support ministries ranging from teaching in Africa, to bible studies in the Philippines, to ministry for Native Americans.
The Church's Response to the HIV Pandemic
Written by Dr. Christiana Russ December 8, 2011
The Executive Council Committee on HIV/AIDS, which was unfunded this triennium, has grappled with how the church should respond to the HIV pandemic now. Will the church remain aware of this pandemic, responsive to changes and active in fighting it? Or as other problems of the poor and marginalized will we rest comfortably with a false notion that HIV is elsewhere and not our problem?
