House of Deputies

Feast of the Epiphany
January 6, 2015

Dear General Convention 2015 Deputies and Alternates:

In November, House of Deputies President Gay Clark Jennings wrote to you with news of a deputy-led campaign in celebration of Episcopal Relief & Development's 75th anniversary. Today, with great hope and excitement, we are kicking off that effort. Our goal is to raise $75,000 between today, the Feast of the Epiphany, and the end of General Convention 2015. We are writing to invite you and your deputation to participate in this joyful effort, which we are calling “Deputies Helping to Heal a Hurting World.”

Below you will find all the information you will need to participate. If each deputy and alternate personally donates (or raises) $100, we will more than meet our goal.

Join the Fun!

How your deputation participates in this campaign is up to you, and the sky is the limit.

Just to sweeten the pot, here is an incentive: Deputy William Miller of the Diocese of Hawaii, author of The Beer Drinker's Guide to God,” will host a beer tasting at the Beer Hive Pub in Salt Lake City during General Convention for the deputation that raises the most money in the campaign. The winning deputation will be announced during the first legislative day of the House of Deputies at General Convention.

Deputations across the country have already begun to consider how they might participate in the campaign.

Deputy Jennifer Baskerville-Burrows of the Diocese of Chicago is heading up a team of runners for the Ragnar Relay Wasatch Back, which happens the weekend before General Convention begins in Salt Lake City. Living Compass, a wellness ministry based in Milwaukee, has donated the entry fees for the team, so all pledges made in support of runners will be donations to Episcopal Relief & Development. Watch the monthly House of Deputies newsletter for information on how to sponsor a runner.

House of Deputies President Gay Jennings has issued a challenge to deputies who want an incentive to get in shape and drop some excess pounds. Together deputies will take pledges per pound, and starting today (Epiphany), begin working to get fit and benefit Episcopal Relief & Development with every pound lost. Want to participate? Deputies will receive monthly updates on the campaign via the House of Deputies website and in the House of Deputies newsletter. The website and newsletter will also feature stories about deputies who are participating in the campaign to support Episcopal Relief & Development, examples of clever and imaginative fundraising efforts sponsored by deputations, and information on how to mount your own fundraising effort.

Thank You!

We leave 2014 behind giving thanks to God for our lives, our families, and our beloved church. In a few short months, we will enjoy the gift of being together in Salt Lake City to make important decisions, to worship with all our hearts, to listen and learn from one another, and to build relationships. We are, as a church community, so richly blessed. In gratitude for all that we have, and all that we are, we hope that you will join us in giving your all to the HoD Episcopal Relief & Development 75th Anniversary Campaign (and have a bit of fun in the process).

Many of us have seen Episcopal Relief & Development’s dramatic impact firsthand. By working with local partners across the globe, Episcopal Relief & Development heals a hurting world by digging wells that provides clean water in villages, providing sanitation facilities, sponsoring micro-loans that allow mothers to plant and grow food, and so much more, including lifesaving domestic disaster response. Most importantly, Episcopal Relief & Development, in cooperation with its partners, doesn’t just provide charity; it provides capacity so that individuals and communities may help themselves. Join us in supporting this important ministry. Join the Episcopal Relief & Development 75th Anniversary Campaign. Be a “Deputy Helping to Heal a Hurting World.”
