House of Deputies of The Episcopal Church

Announcement of Legislative Committee Officers/Un Anuncio de los Oficiales de los Comités Legislativos

November 29, 2017

Dear Deputies:

With a side of turkey over the holiday weekend, I finished one of my favorite tasks of the triennium: appointing deputies to serve as legislative committee officers for General Convention. Today I’m sending that list to all of you so you can begin to prepare for convention by learning who will help to lead the deputy committees that will receive resolutions, hold hearings, craft legislation, and make our work possible. You can find the list of deputy legislative committee officers (updated 25 January 2018)—98 people in all—on the House of Deputies website.

This group of deputy leaders is the youngest and most diverse ever to serve at General Convention. Forty-five percent are under the age of 50, 18% are people of color, and at least 15% identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. This House of Deputies will be the first in history to be majority female, and 52% of our legislative committee leaders will be women.

Together, these 98 leaders will guide our consideration of creative and hope-filled proposals related to the three priorities established by the last General Convention: racial justice and reconciliation, evangelism and church planting, and environmental stewardship and care of creation. The committees they lead will guide us in making challenging decisions about how to fund our hopes for vastly increased mission and ministry and how to follow where God is leading us. I am inspired by their dedication and grateful to them for agreeing to serve.

The General Convention Office will soon release “An Introduction to the 79th General Convention of the Episcopal Church for Deputies and Bishops.” In this document, you’ll find helpful suggestions about how to prepare for General Convention and what to expect while we’re together in Austin. I hope that you’ll take the time to read it and save a copy for reference in the next few months.

Now that we have our roster of officers, I’m turning my attention to appointing members to deputy legislative committees. I am grateful to everyone who filled out the survey about committee preferences over the summer; your responses are all recorded in an enormous spreadsheet, and I am planning to write to you again after the New Year with complete membership rosters for each deputy legislative committee.

In making committee assignments, I am considering your preferences, ministry experience, experience at previous General Conventions, and service on a committee, commission, agency, board or task force during this triennium. I am also seeking to make legislative committees reflect the diversity of the church we strive to be.

As I’m sure you can understand, it is impossible to give every deputy a legislative committee appointment. In fact, to facilitate an efficient convention, legislative committees will generally be smaller than in 2015. If you are not appointed to the committee on which you most hoped to serve, I will be grateful for your participation where you have been assigned. If you are not appointed to a committee, I hope you will spend time attending committee meetings and hearings that interest you to become more familiar with the breadth of the convention’s work. After nine conventions, I can testify that interesting work gets done even in the most unexpected places at General Convention!

Thank you, as always, for your service to the House of Deputies and our beloved Episcopal Church.

Faithfully,

Gay Clark Jennings
President

Estimados Diputados:

Fielmente,

Gay Clark Jennings
