Dear Bishops and Deputies:
A week from today—Tuesday, June 8—we will begin the online election for the Joint Nominating Committee for the Election of the Presiding Bishop. This way of electing leaders will be an experiment—one of many we have undertaken during the COVID-19 pandemic—and we ask all deputies and bishops to participate so we can learn together how best to conduct this aspect of church governance online.
By holding these elections this summer, we will ensure that the committee can begin its work this fall and have ample time to complete it before the 81st General Convention in 2024, when the church will choose a new presiding bishop. We are planning for the upcoming online election with particular consideration for deputies and bishops who may not have adequate access to the internet. Ensuring that every deputy and bishop can vote is our highest priority.
As a result, the pace of our elections will be slow, but we hope it will be easy for you to remember how to participate. Beginning June 8, we will vote every Tuesday until all vacancies on the Joint Nominating Committee for the Election of the Presiding Bishop are filled by nominees who have received a majority of votes cast on a ballot. Each Tuesday at 8 a.m. Eastern, the General Convention Office will release ballots that will remain open for 24 hours. Bishops will vote for bishops, and deputies will vote for laypeople and clergy. Sometime during that 24-hour period, you will need to access your email, open the link to your ballot, and vote. The General Convention Office has published all of the details you need to participate. The most important thing to remember is that beginning June 8, we will vote every Tuesday until all members of the committee have been elected. If either bishops or deputies finish their elections before the end of June, then the General Convention Office will inform us that the election in that house has concluded.
As with any governance experiment, we expect that this online voting process will include some hiccups and unexpected complications. We are grateful in advance for your patience, and grateful, in particular, to the laypeople, clergy and bishops who have offered to serve on the Joint Nominating Committee for the Election of the Presiding Bishop. Please pray for each of them as we embark upon this election process, and please vote beginning June 8.
